Milton McLelland, CMHC - Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Founder & Owner

Milton McLelland, CMHC

Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CMHC) - Founder & Owner

Milton D. McLelland graduated from the University of Phoenix with his Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2012. He worked for the local Medicaid provider (Southwest Behavioral Health Center) in Iron County from 2012-2018. He had the honor of working with the most acute mentally ill clients there. They taught him that a disease does not define a person and that they can build the life they want, even with the hardest of disabilities. In Milton's opinion, every mental health practitioner would benefit from spending a few years in those clinics.

In 2016 Milton started Roots Counseling with his wife, Rochelle, who is also a mental health counselor. They worked part-time until 2018, when they took the leap into full entrepreneurship. Since 2016 they have grown to 5 total therapists and have built a successful practice. Roots Counseling specializes in trauma recovery through understanding and learning how a person got to where they presently are in life, healing through connection with the whole person, mind, body, and spirit. They also help clients obtain growth and strengthening through skills development to drive and build their own life worth living. Hence the Roots' motto: Learn, Heal, Grow, Strengthen.

Milton and Roots' main therapeutic methods are Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (better known as EMDR). Milton has also trained with The Amen Clinic, the world leader in brain health, and The Gottman Method, which specializes in couples' mental wellness.

Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CMHC) - Co-Founder & Clinical Director

Rochelle McLelland is co-founder and Clinical Director of Roots Counseling. Together with her husband Milton, she created Roots Counseling in 2016. She had great opportunities to learn and grow as she worked with adult clients. She was thrown into learning and teaching Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and has loved it ever since. It has been great to use the skills learned to create a foundation for Roots Counseling to build from.

Rochelle also spent time directing the Mobile Crisis Outreach Team, which gave her great opportunities to work with families and youth and develop her skills there. Rochelle is also trained in EMDR and IFS, both of which have added to the foundation created by DBT to make her a well-rounded therapist that can help see and meet the needs of her clients. She believes that the most important component of mental health is human connection, and with that as her focus, she strives to create a comfortable environment for healing and growth.

Darian Hall, MFT Intern at Roots Counseling & Wellness

Darian Hall, (IMFT) MFT Intern

Marriage and Family Therapy Intern

Darian Hall is a Marriage and Family Therapy Intern completing his Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Utah Tech University, with an expected graduation in May 2026. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Southern Utah University (SUU).

Darian specializes in systemic therapy, working with couples, families, individuals, and the broader relational systems that shape people's lives. He conceptualizes client concerns through a systemic lens, thoughtfully considering family of origin, culture, religion/spirituality, and larger systems of support and oppression.

Drawing from diverse life experiences growing up and living in San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area, Oklahoma, Las Vegas, and rural Utah, Darian brings cultural humility and a deep appreciation for a wide range of racial, cultural, and belief systems into the therapy room. His approach is culturally sensitive and postmodern, meaning he collaborates with clients to honor their values and beliefs while co-creating meaningful therapy goals.

Darian primarily works from systemic models and is trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples. With individuals he integrates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills. His style is highly experiential—emphasizing in-session doing, emotional experiencing, and accessing clients' inner resources to create lasting change.

He is committed to evidence-based practices and tailors interventions to each client's unique needs and context. Darian has three years of clinical experience at Roots Counseling (beginning during his undergraduate studies at SUU), as well as prior work as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) supporting children with ADHD, ODD, and neurodevelopmental disorders, and experience with neurodivergent individuals in a residential treatment setting.

Central to his work is de-stigmatization—helping clients release shame by understanding symptoms as complex outcomes of developmental history, systemic factors, genetics, attachment wounds, and life cycles rather than personal defects. He views many coping patterns as once-helpful safety mechanisms that may no longer serve in current relationships or life stages.

Darian prioritizes creating a space of emotional and physical safety, deep understanding, and gentle yet honest support through the sometimes uncomfortable process of change. He believes the most powerful mechanisms of transformation include insight, acceptance, emotional expression and regulation, safety, and living in greater congruence with oneself, others, and reality.

Outside the therapy room, Darian enjoys scientific research, psychology, basketball, music, movies, and geeking out over a wide range of interests. Aka he's a nerd.

I enjoy the outdoors and love to learn from nature. The roots of a tree feed, heal and strengthen the tree. Trees are resilient and grow in some of the most diverse places. A tree growing out of a rock on top of a mountain will shelter, shade, and protect. I am excited to be working with Roots.
