EMDR Therapy in Utah
EMDR is a structured, well-researched therapy that helps the brain process difficult memories that still feel raw, so they hold less power over your present. Roots Counseling offers EMDR with trained clinicians, in person in Cedar City and, where appropriate, by secure telehealth across Utah.
What EMDR is
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Some difficult experiences can get stuck, continuing to trigger distress long after the event. EMDR helps the brain reprocess those memories so they feel less overwhelming. It has strong research support for trauma and is recognized by the World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association.
What happens in EMDR
EMDR follows a structured, paced process. Early sessions focus on getting to know you and building a sense of safety and steadiness before any deeper work begins. When you are ready, your clinician guides you through short sets of gentle eye movements, or sometimes tapping or sounds, while you briefly bring a memory to mind. You stay grounded and in control, and you do not need to describe the memory in detail.
What EMDR can help with
EMDR is best known for post-traumatic stress, and it is also used for anxiety with traumatic roots, single-incident trauma such as an accident, grief, and phobias.
