Teen and Adolescent Therapy in Utah

Growing up comes with real pressure, and sometimes a teen needs a caring, neutral person to talk to who is not a parent or a teacher. Roots Counseling offers therapy for teens and adolescents ages 10 and up, in person in Cedar City and by secure telehealth across Utah, in a space where they can feel heard and understood.

When therapy can help a teen

Adolescence brings big changes, and it is normal for teens to struggle at times. It can be worth reaching out when you notice ongoing anxiety or low mood, withdrawal from friends or family, big shifts in sleep, appetite, or grades, increased irritability or anger, or difficulty coping with a specific event like a move, a loss, or a family change. You do not have to wait for a crisis to get support.

How teen therapy works

Therapy for teens focuses on building trust first. Your teen meets with a clinician who listens without judgment and helps them make sense of what they are feeling and going through. Sessions build practical coping skills and a healthier relationship with stress, emotions, and the people around them. Parents are involved in age-appropriate ways, and your clinician will explain how communication and confidentiality work at the start.

What teens can work on

Teens come to Roots for anxiety, depression, stress and school pressure, self-esteem, friendship and family conflict, big life changes, and difficult experiences. The goal is to help them feel steadier and more capable, at their own pace.

Youth DBT group

We offer a weekly Youth DBT group for teens ages 14 to 18. A teen DBT group teaches practical skills to help adolescents manage intense emotions, cope with stress, improve relationships, and make safer, more effective choices. Skills include mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

In person or by telehealth

Sessions can happen at our Cedar City office or by secure video anywhere in Utah. Some teens open up more easily from their own space, which telehealth allows, while others prefer coming in.
