Marriage and Couples Counseling in Cedar City, Utah

Roots Counseling & Wellness offers marriage and couples counseling in person at our office at 732 N Main Street in Cedar City. Married, engaged, and long-term partners meet with licensed Utah clinicians in a calm, private room, with free parking right outside. Whether you call it marriage counseling or couples counseling, the goal is the same: helping the two of you talk, listen, and work through what feels stuck.

Why couples in Cedar City reach out

You do not need to reach a breaking point before asking for help. Couples often come in for:

  • Communication that keeps looping back to the same argument.
  • Conflict that feels bigger than the topic you started with.
  • Trust that has been shaken and needs rebuilding.
  • Big changes like a new baby, a move, a new job, retirement, or an empty nest.
  • Getting ready for marriage, so you can talk through expectations before the wedding.
  • Feeling distant, even when nothing is "wrong" on paper.

Not sure it is time yet? Our article on signs it may be time for couples counseling can help you think it through. If one of you is ready and the other is unsure, that is common too. Helping a partner who is hesitant about counseling offers gentle ways to start that conversation.

How we work with couples

Our clinicians draw on Gottman-informed and EFT-informed work. The Gottman Method focuses on practical tools for how partners talk, handle conflict, and build friendship. Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) looks at the emotional patterns underneath recurring fights and how partners can reach for each other differently.

Roots is a Gottman Relationship Checkup Approved Member. Your clinician will talk with you about which approach fits your goals, and you set the pace. Sessions typically last 50 minutes.

Some couples also pair their joint sessions with individual counseling, and when kids or extended family are part of the strain, family counseling can bring others into the room. You can read more about our broader couples counseling service as well.

What the first session looks like

Before your first appointment, we send intake paperwork by secure email. It takes up to 30 minutes and covers contact information, insurance, a brief background, and consent. If you do not get to it beforehand, you can finish it when you arrive.

When you get here, park in our free lot and check in at the front desk. In the first session, your clinician gets to know you as a couple: what brought you in, what you each hope will be different, and how you each see things. You do not need the right words. Our guide on preparing for your first counseling session has more tips.

New clients can usually get a first appointment within a week or two. You can ask for a specific clinician or let us match you. Morning and evening appointments can be scheduled by request, which helps when both partners work.

Insurance and couples counseling

Roots is in-network with many major Utah plans, and self-pay is available. We can confirm whether your insurance is accepted, and it is your responsibility to verify your coverage and benefits with your plan.

Some plans treat couples counseling differently from individual counseling, so when you call your plan, ask specifically about couples or marriage counseling benefits. Our insurance page lists the plans we work with.

When coming in is hard to schedule

If schedules or travel make it hard to get to the office together, couples sessions are also available by secure telehealth anywhere in Utah. You can join from one screen or from two places, as long as you are both physically in Utah. Many couples mix in-person and telehealth visits. See telehealth therapy for details.

Serving couples across Iron County

Our office serves Cedar City, including Southern Utah University students and staff, plus couples who drive in from Enoch, Parowan, Kanarraville, and the rest of Iron County. Find directions, hours, and parking on our Cedar City office page.
