DBT Therapy in Utah
DBT, or Dialectical Behavior Therapy, is a proven, skills-based approach that helps people manage intense emotions, get through hard moments, and build steadier relationships. Roots Counseling is a DBT center, offering DBT in person in Cedar City and by secure telehealth across Utah.
What DBT is
The word dialectical points to a balance at the heart of the approach: accepting yourself as you are right now, while also working toward change. DBT was developed by Marsha Linehan and is one of the most researched therapies available.
The four skill areas
Mindfulness (noticing the present moment without judgment); Distress tolerance (getting through hard moments without making things worse); Emotion regulation (understanding and working with strong feelings); Interpersonal effectiveness (asking for what you need and setting limits while keeping relationships intact).
How DBT works at Roots
Roots is a DBT center, and most of our clinicians are trained in DBT and use it in their individual counseling. We offer comprehensive DBT: you can join the DBT skills group on its own, or combine the group with individual counseling. We can talk through which format fits you.
Who DBT can help
DBT was first developed for people who feel emotions very intensely, and the evidence base has since grown to include anxiety, depression with strong emotional waves, and general difficulty regulating emotions.
