Teen Therapy in Cedar City, Utah
Roots Counseling & Wellness sees teens and adolescents ages 10 and up at our office at 732 N Main Street in Cedar City. Sometimes a teen needs a caring, neutral person to talk to who is not a parent or a teacher. Teen therapy gives young people a space of their own, with parents involved in ways that fit the family.
When counseling can help a teen
Adolescence brings big changes, and it is normal for teens to struggle at times. Families in Cedar City often reach out when they notice:
- Ongoing worry or low mood that is not lifting.
- Pulling away from friends, family, or activities they used to enjoy.
- Big shifts in sleep, appetite, or grades.
- More irritability or anger than usual.
- A hard time coping with a specific event, like a move, a loss, a friendship ending, or a family change.
You do not have to wait for a crisis to get support. If you are unsure, a first conversation with our front desk can help you decide on next steps.
How teen therapy works at Roots
Therapy for teens starts with building trust. Your teen meets with a clinician who listens without judgment and helps them make sense of what they are feeling. Over time, sessions build practical coping skills and a healthier relationship with stress, emotions, and the people around them.
Teens come to Roots for anxiety, depression, stress and school pressure, self-esteem, friendship and family conflict, big life changes, and difficult experiences. The goal is to help them feel steadier and more capable, at their own pace.
How parents are involved
Parents are part of the process in age-appropriate ways. At the start, your teen's clinician explains how communication and confidentiality work, including what is kept private and when information is shared, so everyone knows what to expect.
When the stress is affecting the whole household, family counseling can bring parents and siblings into the conversation alongside your teen's individual sessions.
Youth DBT group in Cedar City
Roots is a DBT center, and we run a weekly Youth DBT group for teens ages 14 to 18 at our Cedar City office. The group teaches practical skills for managing intense emotions, coping with stress, getting along with others, and making safer, more effective choices. Skills include mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.
A teen can join the group on its own or pair it with individual counseling. New to DBT? Start with What Is DBT? or our DBT therapy page.
Scheduling around school
Morning and evening appointments can be scheduled by request, which many families find helpful around school, sports, and work. New clients can usually get a first appointment within a week or two. Call (435) 233-2240, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM.
Before the first visit, we send intake paperwork by secure email. It takes up to 30 minutes and covers contact information, insurance, a brief background, and consent. Park in our free lot and check in at the front desk. For a family-friendly walkthrough, see preparing for your first counseling session.
In person or by telehealth
Sessions can happen at our Cedar City office or by secure video anywhere in Utah. Some teens open up more easily from their own space, which telehealth allows, while others prefer coming in. Learn more about telehealth therapy.
Insurance
Roots is in-network with many major Utah plans, and self-pay is available. We can confirm whether your insurance is accepted, and it is your responsibility to verify your coverage and benefits with your plan. See our insurance page for the current list.
