Online Couples Therapy for St. George Area Couples
Roots Counseling & Wellness provides online couples therapy and marriage counseling for partners in St. George and the surrounding area. Sessions take place over secure video with licensed Utah clinicians, and you can join together on one screen or from two different places. Many couples find telehealth makes it easier to show up consistently, without arranging a drive or a babysitter.
How online couples sessions work
You and your partner meet with your clinician over a HIPAA-compliant video platform. Sessions are typically 50 minutes, the same as in the office. If the video drops, your clinician can move the session to phone so you are not left hanging mid-conversation.
There are two common setups:
- Together on one screen. You sit side by side at a laptop or tablet, in the same room for the conversation.
- From two locations. One of you joins from home and the other from work, or each from a separate room. This can help when schedules are tight or one partner wants some space.
Both partners need to be physically in Utah at the time of the session. That is a state licensing rule, so plan around trips out of state.
A few privacy tips
A private setting helps you both speak openly:
- Wear headphones if anyone else is home.
- Schedule sessions when kids are at school, asleep or out of earshot.
- Close the door and silence notifications.
- If you are in two places, each pick a spot where no coworker or roommate can overhear.
Why couples reach out
You do not need to reach a breaking point before asking for help. Common reasons include:
- Communication that keeps looping into the same argument.
- Conflict that feels bigger than the topic you started with.
- Trust that has been shaken and needs rebuilding.
- Life transitions like a new baby, a move, a job change, retirement or an empty nest.
- Preparing for marriage, so you can talk through expectations before the wedding.
Sometimes one partner is ready and the other is unsure. That is common. Our article on what to do when a partner is hesitant about counseling offers gentle ways to start that conversation. If you are still deciding whether counseling makes sense, signs it may be time for couples counseling is a helpful read.
Approaches we draw on
Our clinicians use Gottman-informed and EFT-informed work with couples. The Gottman Method focuses on practical tools for how partners talk, handle conflict and build friendship. Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) looks at the emotional patterns underneath recurring fights and how partners can reach for each other differently.
Roots is a Gottman Relationship Checkup Approved Member. Your clinician will talk with you about which approach fits your goals. Read more about our broader couples counseling service as well.
What the first session looks like
Before your first appointment, you can expect intake paperwork by secure email. It takes up to 30 minutes and covers contact information, insurance, brief background and consent.
In the first session, your clinician will get to know you as a couple: what brought you in, what you hope will be different and how you each see things. You do not need the right words. The goal is to understand where you are and talk about a plan that feels workable to both of you. Our guide on preparing for your first counseling session has more tips.
Most first appointments can be scheduled within a week or two. You can request a specific clinician or let us match you.
Insurance and couples counseling
We are in-network with many major Utah plans, and self-pay is available. We can confirm whether your insurance is accepted, and it is your responsibility to verify your coverage and benefits with your plan.
One thing worth knowing: some plans treat couples counseling differently from individual counseling. When you call your plan, ask specifically about couples or marriage counseling benefits. Our insurance page lists the plans we work with.
Prefer to meet in person?
